What Is a WiFi QR Code?
A WiFi QR code encodes your network credentials (SSID, password, encryption type) into a scannable format. When someone scans the code with their phone camera, they are automatically prompted to join the network without manually entering the password.
This technology uses the WIFI: URI scheme supported by both iOS and Android. The encoded string looks like WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:Password;;. But you never need to write it by hand. Our generator handles the encoding for you.
WiFi QR codes are especially valuable in environments where you frequently share your network with guests: restaurants, coworking spaces, Airbnb properties, conference venues, and home offices. Instead of printing the password on a sticky note, you print or display a clean QR code.
How to Create a WiFi QR Code
Creating a WiFi QR code with QRHub takes under 30 seconds:
1. Select "WiFi QR" from the type picker above. 2. Enter your network name (SSID) exactly as it appears on your router. 3. Enter the password. 4. Choose the encryption type. WPA/WPA2 is the most common. Use WEP only for legacy networks, and None for open networks. 5. If your network is hidden (does not broadcast its SSID), toggle the hidden option. 6. Click Generate. 7. Download the QR code as PNG, SVG, or PDF and print it.
The generated QR encodes your WiFi credentials directly so guests can connect with one scan.
Best Practices for WiFi QR Codes
Print large enough: Make sure the QR code is at least 2×2 cm (about 0.8 inches) for close-range scanning, or larger for wall-mounted signs.
Place strategically: Put the code where guests naturally look. On the reception desk, on restaurant table tents, near the entrance, or on the room information sheet in a hotel.
Update when you change the password: When you rotate your WiFi password, generate a new QR code and replace the old one.
Use high contrast: A dark QR on a light background scans faster. Avoid placing the code on busy patterns or near other visual noise.
Consider a guest network: For security, create a separate guest SSID with limited access instead of sharing your primary network.
WiFi QR Code for Business
Businesses of all sizes benefit from WiFi QR codes. Restaurants can add them to menus, eliminating the "What's your WiFi password?" question. Hotels print them on key card holders or in-room guides. Coworking spaces display them at the entrance.
For events and conferences, WiFi QR codes printed on lanyards or displayed on screens let hundreds of attendees connect without staff intervention. No password typing required.
Supported Encryption Types
QRHub supports all standard WiFi encryption formats:
WPA/WPA2/WPA3: The most common and recommended encryption. Almost all modern routers use WPA2 or WPA3.
WEP: An older, less secure standard. Only use if your router does not support WPA.
None (Open): For open networks with no password. The QR code will connect the user without any credential prompt.
Hidden Networks: If your SSID is hidden (not broadcast), enable the hidden option so the device knows to probe for the network name.
Print-ready WiFi QR codes
Download PNG, SVG, PDF, JPEG, or WebP. Adjust colors so the code matches your brand materials. Print on table tents, reception desks, or welcome cards. Guests scan and connect instantly.
